The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) will likely impact airlines as the sector’s total emissions will start catching up and exceeding the CORSIA baseline.
At ICAO’s most recent Assembly meeting, CORSIA was reviewed to include a baseline of 85% of the 2019 emission levels from 2024. The scale of the impact on airlines may be negligible in 2023, but the revised baseline from 2024 may lead to high costs for airlines, especially those operating many international flights between CORSIA volunteer states.
